我國的佛教歷史悠久，底蘊深厚；到處都流淌著佛教文化。從古至今，許多地方的人們都喜歡興建寺廟，用來供奉他們的守護(hù)神，也就是人們所信仰的佛教諸神菩薩。簡而言之，寺廟就是人們宗教信仰的皈依之地，也是佛教文化的匯聚之所；供奉在寺廟中的各種石雕佛像，便是人們精神信仰的寄托所在。人們通過寺廟中供奉的石雕佛像，將虛無縹緲的佛教信仰變成實際存在的佛像雕塑上，可以更真切地感受到無邊的佛法和璀璨的佛教文化。但是佛教中的諸佛菩薩因為身份不同，在形象和造型上也有很大的不同，而且有些石雕佛像經(jīng)常出現(xiàn)在各大寺廟中。

比如釋迦牟尼佛，幾乎在每一座寺廟的主體建筑，或是大雄寶殿的正殿中都會擺放一尊釋迦牟尼佛，這些擺放在室內(nèi)的大多是采用漢白玉雕刻或者是木雕的。而石雕釋迦牟尼佛則一般擺放在露天場所，比如寺廟大型廣場上等等。通常情況下，擺放在露天場所的石雕釋迦摩尼佛都是較大型的，其雄偉挺拔的身姿和莊嚴(yán)肅穆的神態(tài)，向我們展示了佛法的崇高和偉岸。
